It's important to realize that every child is different and develops at his or her own rate. The charts below offer general guidelines to help you assess your child's speech and language development.
 
GENERAL DEVELOPMENT CHART

Speech Sound Development

1st Month

Physical

arm and leg movement are reflexes

head flops if not supported

can see things about 10 inches away

stares at an object but does not reach for it

loves skin-to-skin contact

prefers to look at high contrast patterns and faces

alert 1 out of every 10 hours

begins to trust caregiver

most behavior is reflexive

will cry if understimulated or overstimulated

responds to voices

small cooing begins
